Backyard Landscape Renovation in Mount Pleasant

Backyard Landscape Renovation in Mount Pleasant

The project was a Backyard Landscape Renovation in Mount Pleasant.

The client wanted the renovation to address a few problems:
Overall, the yard had been untended for a while and was overgrown and exhausted. There was an existing Playhouse the owners had built (and built well!) - many years ago that was no longer used by their children, but they wanted to keep it. Unfortunately, it weighed a ton and was 6 inches off the ground on posts of dubious strength, and there was no access for machines to lower it. Hard surfaces needed to be included for entertaining and kitchen herbs. The yard sloped upward quickly upon entering, and there was no retaining wall on the west side, which made it smaller and less usable than it could be with proper retention.

So, we installed: a simple timber retaining wall along the west property line, a much more elaborate split-faced right-angled concrete block wall at the backyard's north end, and quarter-circle steps. Two separate brick paved surfaces, one for dining and one for pots. A Pennsylvania bluestone flagstone area, with the joints filled with creeping groundcovers. We planted large, shade-tolerant shrubs along the east and south perimeter. And finally, the Playhouse was lowered to the ground level in a painstaking and stress-inducing manner, using eight columns of individual concrete blocks, four automotive jacks, four blocks of 6x6 timber and many prayers. And it worked!
